“I think about myself as being true to myself”
I don’t really think about myself as being different as much as I think about myself as being true to myself. I try to be true to my creativity and doing what I feel like doing.
I make story quilts. I like to tell stories. My current series is on fashionistas, I’m focusing on domesticity. I think of myself as a domestic artist because I like to cook and garden and sew and create warm living spaces.
They are a little vignettes, snapshots of a scene, like people cooking dinner together or a family. They’re really fun, very playful, happy. Sometimes I make political and social statements but mostly I’m trying to make people feel good. My starting point was in traditional quilting and fashion design.
When I was little I enjoyed my Barbie doll because I dressed her. I designed my first clothes for my Barbie and then for the Barbie’s of the children I babysat for.
