Lady Gaga received the Making a Difference award from the Anti-Defamation League on behalf of her Born This Way Foundation for ‘championing positive social change.‘
Born This Way Foundation was launched by Lady Gaga and her mom Cynthia Germanotta . The foundation aims to create a “braver, kinder world” for youths; create safe-spaces, promote the learning of life skills, and provide opportunities to improve their local communities. Lady Gaga said “My mother and I have initiated a passion project… to establish a standard of bravery and kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment.” Lady Gaga has a history of action against bullying and empowerment of young people.
“The Foundation shares ADL’s mission of combating bullying among young people,” an ADL press release said.
“This is such an incredible honor,” Gaga said in a videotaped acceptance speech. “The No Place For Hate Award is a huge deal for both of us, especially because of all of the hard work ADL has been doing to fight anti-Semitism, homophobia, bigotry and intolerance for the past 100 years.”
The award was presented at a ceremony in New York City attended by children from 85 different New York and New Jersey schools.
“Lady Gaga is so much more than a pop artist, so much more than an incredible entertainer. She is a one-of-a-kind inspirational champion for social change and a positive role model for young people,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL’s national director.
