“It’s OK to be outside your comfort zone”
As a black girl in general, people seem to have stereotypes that we are all, you know, in the hood, we don’t have any class, you have to like a certain thing to be considered black. But growing up I liked watching anime and liking anime characters or Disney characters. So I was pretty much difference. People thought I was more white than I was black because I didn’t fit the standard and the stereotypes of a black person. But I overcame it because I stopped caring because they’re not part of my life anymore. They don’t run my life. They can’t do anything about it because only I can do something about it. And I want to encourage other black cosplayers that it’s OK to be outside your comfort zone. And that’s pretty much how I got through it.
I’m portraying princess Kida from Atlantis. It’s an old Disney movie that nobody knows about but she was one of my favorite princesses. I just really like it. I really wanted to do her because she inspired me a lot because she was strong and independent. And she gave up so much to protect her city and her citizens. That’s pretty much why I wore this because she’s my favorite.
I had a lot of Goofy’s. I really loved Goofy. He’s my other goofy personality. I could connect with him. I also have Piglet and teddy bears. Goofy’s have been with me throughout my whole life so I appreciated it being there still. It’s all worn out. He helped me keep positive throughout situations because he’s not the most smartest or the most balanced person. He’s kind of clumsy. That’s kind of how I was at a point and I still am. So he kept me stable in a sense, beside having people keep me stable. He kept me stable because it was OK to be a little bit crazy and just accepting of yourself.
