“We realized it was OK to be who we are”
I’m Puerto Rican, grew up in New York and moved to Canada. That was the hardest thing in the world because there is not a whole lot of Puerto Ricans or anybody of color in Canada that was in the area I was in. So me and my brothers were always the ones picked on. Then we came into our own, went back home. Then we realized it was OK to be who we are and we are a lot stronger for it now. It’s OK to be something amazing, to be Puerto Rican, to be more in your culture and to realize it is something to embrace.
When I was little I did have a stuffed animal it was a King Kong radio my dad gave me. It was crazy looking. He wanted to get me the dog but I ended up getting the King Kong one, which is so bizarre. I always put lipstick on it because I wanted it to be a girl King Kong. I wore that thing out until the stuffing came out. I loved it to death.
